CDI utilized its DPDSV WITCH QUEEN to install two Submersible Distribution Units (SDU), a Subsea Termination Unit (STU), and lay 20,500 feet of wellhead control umbilical for the Amerada Hess “Penn State” development in 1650 feet of water located at Garden Banks blocks 260 and 216.
A 17,000 foot umbilical connected the newly installed “Baldpate” compliant tower in GB 260 to the first SDU in GB 216. The unique aspect of the project was the installation of a 105 foot connection between the first SDU and the STU. Traditionally a connection of this type is referred to as a “flying lead” , and is accomplished with flexible hydraulic hose and mechanical fittings. Amerada Hess chose to utilize stainless steel tubes with welded connections because of a requirement for high pressure chemical injection for the wells as well as reliability. Kvaerner Oilfield Products designed and fabricated the system. It is only the second time a system of this type has been installed in the Gulf of Mexico.
A second 4,500 foot umbilical was laid to connect the remaining SDU to the STU.
